Attendance Requirements
All students aged 6 to 18 are required to attend school daily (E.C. 48200). Parents or guardians are responsible for ensuring their child's regular attendance. Please note:
-
Truancy Definition: A student is considered truant if they are absent for three full days without a valid excuse, tardy, or absent for more than thirty minutes on three occasions, or any combination of these (E.C. 48260).
-
Consequences: Truancy can lead to serious consequences, including fines and criminal prosecution. Truant students will be referred to the District Attendance Chairperson and may be subject to a District Attendance Review Team (DART) and School Attendance & Review Board (SARB) review.
-
Home Visits: The District may conduct home visits to verify student residency and attendance requirements at any time without notice.
Excused vs. Unexcused Absences
A key factor in providing a quality education is continuous instruction. Ensure your child attends school regularly and is absent only for illness or emergency reasons. For attendance records, it's important to distinguish between excused and unexcused absences.
-
Illness or Emergency: If your child is absent due to illness or an emergency, please call the school office on the day of the absence or send a note when they return, explaining the reason.
-
Communicable Diseases or Injuries: If your child has had a communicable disease, serious injury, or a medical condition that restricts activity, they must report to the nurse’s office before going to their classroom.
Excessive Absences
If your child is absent from school for more than 10 days:
-
Notification: A letter will be placed in your child's permanent record.
-
SART Meeting: A School Attendance Review Team (SART) meeting may be scheduled to address the issue.
Regular attendance is critical for your child's success. Let's work together to ensure they are in school, ready to learn!
